The Captive, also known as The Prisoner, is volume five of Marcel Proust’s A la recherche de temps perdu, In search of lost time. Like other books in the series, it is the process of reading that forms the point of the exercise, not the plot, nor the feeling of resolution at the end, for there isn’t one, nor the historical setting, nor the events. Time here is the process that forms the characters, forms us, leaves them, like us, precisely where we are, perhaps nowhere. The author becomes enamored of Albertine, cannot quite fix his own, or her sexuality and, like everyone else, is never sure about anything.
