The army days weren’t fun, but they were good. I learned a lot about myself and about other people. And I also learned a lot about the army and how things work in the army.

When you enter the army, you’re nothing. In the first six weeks of basic training, which felt like a year, you were knocked down until you were less than nothing. When you had gotten rid of all your civilian ways, the lieutenant and corporal in charge of you started waking up the army ways in you.

I realised that if you wanted to get somewhere in the army, you had to become an officer, because then you wouldn’t have to run to that bush far, far away every five minutes. You had to do a course or two, then you became an officer and chief over the hundred.

But you were never left unsupervised. The captain watched the lieutenant and the sergeant watched the corporal. And worst of all, above the sergeant, the sergeant major was roaring.

There was no dust cloud or big noise on the officers’ side. They were treated with great respect. Every time an officer of higher rank walked past, you had to salute that person.

The officers’ ranks went like this: lieutenant, captain, major, lieutenant colonel, colonel, and brigadier general who was the most important. To be promoted from one rank to another you had to do many courses, work very hard, and be a very special person.

The prime minister entrusted the country’s safety to the chief of the army. He had to ensure that the citizens of the country were safe and able to sleep well in their beds at night.

However, when God appoints a person, that person doesn’t start at the bottom as a common soldier who is broken down. Even less do you have to work and move through the ranks to eventually get to the top to be the commander-in-chief.

No, God appoints a person at the top just below the angels: 7You made them not quite as high as angels, bright with Eden’s dawn light. Then you put them in charge of your entire handcrafted world. 8When God put them in charge of everything, nothing was excluded.

God trusts people a lot. He is prepared to have people manage the world. He appoints people in the highest position and trusts us with it.

That means such a lot to me. Next time, when I’m feeling lower than low because I have no self-esteem or simply feel unworthy, I will remind myself that God sees me in a different light. He thinks so much of me that He gives me the highest rank with all the honour that only kings normally deserve.

That’s why I can lift up my head and run to meet life – because God thinks the world of me.

Hebrews 2:5-9

Reflection
How is your self-image?
Do you see yourself the way God sees you?
Who do you have to show that God sees them as important?

Prayer
Father, You are a good Father. In Your eyes I have more value and I can take on the world. Thank you! Amen.
